What is a digital twin?

Answer

The competition organizers and jury members adhere to the definition proposed by the Digital Twin Consortium and extensively developed through examples and articles on the website twinplus.fr. A "digital twin" is a digital replica, a model of an existing or planned object or set of objects. While it is often grounded in reality and a real environment, a digital twin can, in some cases, be a completely disconnected model (virtual twin). While a digital twin is most often represented in 3D, sometimes visualized in augmented, mixed, or virtual reality, or even in an immersive metaverse-type environment, it can also be purely schematic. The concept of a digital twin is relatively recent. In practice, it has been developing for several years, driven by the digitization of processes, the proliferation of standardized data, and the rise of connected objects (IoT). Interoperability between solutions (CAD, BIM, GIS, CMMS, BMS, etc.) facilitates its development. Significant advances in computing (computing, storage, telecommunications) are driving its growth across all sectors: construction, industry, healthcare, aerospace, energy, climate, and more. Thus, a digital twin is built from various software components, often already in place within organizations, and initial digital data supplemented by new data from real-time sensors. Leveraging this dataset and its interactions enables numerous applications related to design and construction, monitoring, control, and maintenance. The digital twin is also used for analysis, simulations, and forecasting, relying on machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. Finally, if there can be one or more digital twins, responding to one or more specific uses, the digital twins can interact with each other in a system-of-systems logic.

How does the jury select the winners?

The selection criteria for the winning projects are established by a jury of experts who recognize that there is no single, ideal model. Indeed, digital twins can be based on a wide variety of architectures and core software components, tailored to their intended uses. Similarly, various paces and biases in data integration and consolidation can exist. Digital twins also offer a multitude of ways to represent, visualize, and share data with numerous users. Finally, digital twins are becoming essential tools supporting diverse uses, driving productivity and new, sometimes entirely new, services. Beyond more traditional selection criteria, such as project quality, potential, or innovative nature, the jury will pay particular attention to the commitment to integrating issues related to the ecological transition and climate change. The jury's selection is based on all applications, including application videos, written submissions, and attachments (images, PDFs, screenshots). Each juror has 15 days to review the applications. They assign different scores based on the following criteria: relevance of the topic, collaborative dynamics, technologies involved & digital convergence, data management and quality, reproducibility, and innovative approach. The average of their scores determines their overall score for each application. If necessary, the juror provides a comment. Note: in the event of a lack of impartiality, the organizers may ask a juror not to review one or more applications. Meeting as a jury, the jurors validate the titles of the main categories defined by the organizers for all applications received. The applications are then distributed among the different categories and ranked according to the average score of all the jurors. Within each category, the 3 finalists are debated based on the scores and comments of the jurors. In the event of a tie or lack of consensus, the jury proceeds to a vote by elimination. The jury chair has one additional point which they may award if they wish. He can only use it once. Important: Following the ceremony, each candidate receives a summary sheet of the jury's evaluation. This document provides their average score for each category and their overall average. It also includes the (anonymous) comments from the jury. While this summary is produced with complete transparency, it is not intended to be a formal study or advisory service. However, it may help candidates understand the jury's choices and provide some useful and constructive feedback for their own projects.

Why apply?

Answer

Digital twins are currently attracting increasing attention from elected officials, decision-makers, business leaders, and investors. Users are also showing interest, as are the media and, through them, professionals and the general public. The Digital Twins Trophies aim to highlight the projects and achievements, their implementation, uses, and direct and indirect benefits. This additional communication is helpful for understanding and gaining everyone's support. It is a significant aid in securing funding and in obtaining and maintaining an operating budget. Beyond the awards and a ceremony for insiders and experts, each application will be showcased on Twin+, particularly through the distribution of video presentations. Nominated projects and winners will be featured in press releases, articles, and dedicated reports in publications distributed especially at events highlighting the theme. Other articles and video interviews will be shared throughout the year and until the next ceremony, on twinplus.fr via social media and by partners. Finally, some project leaders may be invited to participate in roundtables or conferences.

Question 4

What are the participation fees?

Registration and participation in the Digital Twins Awards are completely free. Only one entry fee is required for the ceremony in December in Paris. Only one trophy is awarded per winner. Additional trophies for winners are available for purchase and will be offered by the organizers after the ceremony.

Question 5

Who is participating in the competition?

Answer

The competition is open to all digital twin projects, regardless of their objective or sector. Projects located in France and abroad are welcome. Applicants may be local authorities, businesses, public or private organizations, researchers, or students. Important: Any project initiated, developed, and/or led by a third party, such as an IT services company, must have the approval of the project owner, who must jointly submit the application. Applications must be submitted in French or English.
